In 1999, I met and married my husband. He is from Peru. In 2003, we had a son. I was born here in Virginia as was my son. Soon after we were married, we started paperwork for my husband to become a citizen.

I knew he was not legal and didn’t care because I thought .. “I am an American, when we get married, he will become an American!” Not so. We filed several motions and a lot of paperwork with a local lawyer, and spent lots of money, only to be told, there is nothing else we can do without putting your husband in fear of being picked up at any time.

So, we waited and prayed laws would change. On May 14, 2011, ICE knocked on my door and arrested my husband. He is married to an American woman, has an American born child, does not have a criminal history, pays his taxes and is a wonderful man. He is still in custody and we are fighting to get him out. He came here almost 20 yrs ago and was caught…. an order of deportation was issued and he did not comply. Now, they are ripping us apart. I love my husband and desperately want him back.

Let's Talk

It's time for a new conversation about immigration in America, and it starts with us.
