MY DEFINITION OF AMERICA My mother brought me to America when I was in my teens, she wanted a better a life for me, more opportunities to succeed without repression. My husband’s ancestors came from Ireland and Italy. My grandmother always used to tell me, “Mija (child) cuando the vallas a los New Yores, (when you leave to New York) you are going to see wonders! There the buildings are made of crystal, the roads paved in gold, the door knobs are made out of diamonds”! that was America to her. To me America is the place were life is better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement, regardless of social class or circumstances of birth. We all came to America because we wanted a county free from monopolies, free to travel and settle wherever he/she pleases. NO PASSPORT IS DEMANDED, no police mingling in our affairs, no armies to waken the physical and moral power of the people. That is my definition of America. Lilly C. Mexican American
