In one sense, American means an inhabitant of the two American continents — ANY inhabitant of North and South America. When people use “American” to mean “people of the United States,” I would define it as meaning any resident of the US who makes this country their home. This would mean anyone who was born OR grew up here since childhood and knows no other country, as well as immigrants who came legally like some of my ancestors and those who came illegally like my great-grandfather who took a ship to Canada and slipped over the border so the people on Ellis Island would not send him back to Europe due to an eye ailment. Once here he got cured and became a productive law-abiding tax-paying citizen — and a good American.
