I am a U.S. citizen. I served 17 years in the U.S. Marine corps. My husband of 9 years is undocumented. We have 2 children.

Last year we received a phone call from a friend his whose wife is from Honduras. He had just received his green card. His wife has been in the U.S. for about 15 years I believe. Because of a special law for people from her country this woman was allowed to legally obtain a green card for her husband. Her husband who had the same illegal status as my husband.

While I was happy for them, words cannot express my anger that a new immigrant from another country has more clout under the law than I do as an American born veteran. I feel humiliated by my own government’s laws. I understand the wait your turn argument but I know for a fact that most Americans do not understand that immigration law is not based on fairness but on politics. So we wait in the shadows for a miracle.

Let's Talk

It's time for a new conversation about immigration in America, and it starts with us.
