To me an American is someone who believes that every person is entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – and who is willing to work to achieve that. To be American is to love the freedoms we enjoy, and to be willing to protect them no matter how inconvenient. To be American is to have faith that your goals can have no limits, so long as you pursue them without hurting others. Being American is not defined by your religion, color of your skin, or even where you were born. We are a country founded on ideals, ideals that are quoted ad nauseum in political speeches and used as rallying cries, and those same ideals should define who we are. Those who choose to uphold them, work hard to further them, and live every day in recognition of them are American.
