At Define American, we’re building an America that belongs to any person who calls this country home. With thousands of supporters across the country, we are building a country that embraces and welcomes all people, giving them an opportunity to practice citizenship regardless of the circumstances of their birth. For us, citizenship is not the possession of papers, or lack thereof; it is belonging to a community that loves, and having the opportunity to realize families’ dreams. And this citizenship cannot be defined by one’s bloodline and or the soil within our borders because it is created every day through the work, ideals, and values and participation of all who seek the American experience.
If you share that vision, we want you to join our movement.

Define American Creative Arts Fellowships are $5,000 to $10,000 awards that will be granted to a cohort of five to seven emerging artists who happen to be undocumented Americans. Although breaking into the art world is universally difficult, undocumented artists are especially vulnerable as they face systemic obstacles. Often, traditional funders and fellowship programs place limits on eligibility based on immigration status, making it difficult for some undocumented artists to raise their visibility on social media and advocate for their work. These artists will work directly alongside Define American staff to meet fundamental needs that artists require in order to create high-impact work. This relationship will enable Define American to shape the curriculum, identify gaps in knowledge, and learn how to better support undocumented creators. Each fellow will have the opportunity to work on a creative project that will be completed by the end of the program period, using the fellowship funding to support the creation of the project. Additionally, a core part of this fellowship is to pair each artist with a local community-based organization to better understand the needs of their community and how art can be a part of creating new and innovative solutions. At the end of the fellowship, the artists will be empowered, have developed leadership skills, and be better equipped to serve their communities.
The fellowship recognizes creative vision and commitment to excellence within a wide range of artistic categories in the literary and visual arts, including creative non-fiction, fiction, graphic novels, playwriting, poetry, spoken word, ceramics, collage, drawing, installation, new media, painting, photography, performance art, sculpture, video art, interdisciplinary work, and more.
The online application opens on Friday, January 18, 2019 and must be submitted by 11:59 PM EST on Friday, February 8, 2019.
