Why these students are using the hashtag #Immigrad – and you should too

At graduation time, there are countless stories of immigrant families that get “picked up” by the news media. Stories that crystallize the national debate about immigration in a hopeful, positive way.

But often times these narratives betray the intentions of these immigrants and their families. By only raising up the stories of the valedictorians, the medalists, and exceptional – we are missing out on the complete picture.

The truth is, immigrants are just like the rest of Americans, unique in their accomplishments and abilities. But at graduation time, we all stand proudly together on the same stage. It’s time we recognized that.

These students have used the hashtag #ImmiGrad to tell their story. Some of them have also submitted their story to Define American story platform for extra visibility, and support for talking to the media.
