From Define American’s Executive Director, Rev. Ryan M. Eller:
“As a person of faith, I’m heartbroken by this senseless violence. While the details of what happened last night are still unfolding, we do know the history of the Emanuel AME Church and the fact that it was founded at a time in our country in which race literally divided us as a people.
It is truly tragic that nearly 200 years later, our society has not evolved past such hate. At Define American, we focus on coming together as Americans to embrace our shared humanity and accept and celebrate our diversity. If we ever wish to fulfill the promise of this country, we must revolt against racism in all its many, many forms – from the horrific actions of a man yesterday to the choice of leaders in that state to allow a Confederate flag to fly across its capitol.
The culpability is not limited to the one who pulled the trigger. We must, amidst our pain, dedicate ourselves to a new national conversation about race and identity. ”
